Previously-read copy that is solid but unremarkable, with some stress lines on spine, a fold mark in the top back corner (visible in photos), a bit of that Bronze Age printer’s yellow ink spillover on the top edge that you see on so many copies of the day, and otherwise light handling wear from a prior reading. Pages still look good, so a good reading copy.2VG/FN Sub-Mariner 2 VG/FN 5.0 1968 John Buscema / Inhumans, Black Bolt app, vs Triton2FN+ Sub-Mariner 2 FN+ 6.5 1968 / John Buscema / Inhumans, Black Bolt app, vs Triton3FN/VF Sub-Mariner 3 FN/VF 7.0 1968 John Buscema / vs Leviathan, Triton (Inhumans) app3VF- Sub-Mariner 3 VF- 7.5 1968 / John Buscema / vs Leviathan, Triton (Inhumans) app4VF+32.5008/68 – by Roy Thomas/John Buscema, Attuma app, 1st app Saru-San, 1st app Kor-Konn – “Who Strikes for Atlantis?” Surfaceflat, clean, with a fantastically shiny and slick surface, and about as smooth to the touch as any new copy.Edge Wearthat dark background would serve to highlight any edge wear, and as you can tell from the photos, there simply isn’t much there except right at the bottom edge (easily seen in the photos)Overall Wearnot much — the book looks almost new — unbelievable shine!Folds/CreasesnoneWrinklingnoneCornersmostly sharp, with just a little blunting at both spine cornersPrinting DefectsnoneArrival StampsnoneSpinebook probably was at least gently paged through before, but left behind only tiny signs of it — some visible spine ticks only in the close-up, in-your-face side photos — this isn’t a perfect spine, but it’s flat and tight and looks greatSpine Rollabsolutely noneTears/SplitsnoneStaplesnot discolored or rusty — both look good and go all the way through to the centerfold.Back covernot as white as it must have been a half-century ago, sure, but clean and shiny — well preserved!SmudgesI see none, even when I hold the book up to the lightSurface build-upeven under a magnifying glass, I really don’t see any — this one was stored away properly early in its lifetimeInner coversshow signs of light Silver Age tanning right along edges, but clean.Page coloroff-white, even hinting toward white still in placesPage conditiongood with no sign of brittleness; everything nicely attached — I noted a couple of minor interior margin tears (like the one I show in the photos), but all this is still allowed.BOTTOM LINEThis is without a doubt a top-notch copy that displays almost like a brand new one in its bag and board. Granted, that little rough edge on the bottom disqualifies it for full NM contention, and there are a handful of ticks right on the extreme edge of the spine, but in every other way, it’s an absolute beauty and sits easily between VF+ to VF/NM. There are plenty of photos at your disposal to look it over well and make your own call. 5VG/FN Sub-Mariner 5 VG/FN 1968 / Roy Thomas, John Buscema / 1st appearance Tiger Shark6cPR2.5010/68 – by Roy Thomas/John Buscema, 2nd app Tiger Shark; 2nd app Dr. Dorcas; 2nd app Diane Arliss, Destiny app (Paul Destine) – “And To the Vanquished…Death!” This one does not require much description — it’s in poor condition, completely missing cover. Pages all seem to be present, so it’s suitable for reading, but it’s nothing more than a low-cost filler. While not particularly valuable in its own right, it does conclude the first Tiger Shark storyline, so if you’ve sprung good money buying the expensive issue #5 and have only a little funds left and want to be able to finish the story, this might be a possible way to do that at a lower cost. But I recommend not buying this one its own — combine it as an add-on with other copies found here.7FN39.0011/68 – by Roy Thomas/John Buscema, Tiger Shark app, Death of Destiny (Paul Destine), 1st app Ikthon, Cover is black-and-white photo of New York parade; Drawing of Namor superimposed – “For President – The Man Called Destiny!” Surfaceflat, largely clean, still with nice shine, and very smooth to the touchEdge Wearmostly very minor (see photos)Overall Wearnothing notable that the photos don’t showFolds/Creasesyou can probably make out the one in back lower-left, but a couple of others require you to hold the book up to the light, so very faint hints onlyWrinklingalmost none — it’s pretty smoothCornersslight bluntingPrinting DefectsnoneArrival StampsnoneSpinesome light wear from a prior reading — you can see little color breaks / spine ticks, but not many stress lines; very solid hereSpine Rollabsolutely noneTears/SplitsnoneStaplesnot discolored or rusty — both still look good, but lower staple didn’t make it properly through to the centerfold — see close-up photos — that centerfold page is tenuous; still attached at upper staple, but I would recommend not testing it.Back coversomewhat faded after nearly 55 years; has some visible surface specks showing, but not much actual wearSmudgesA few show when you hold the book up to the light — a little dot here or there; mostly clean though and all are too faint to show in the photosSurface build-upback has only a faint hint of some; a stray speck here or there.Inner coverssome light Silver Age tanning along edges, but clean.Page colorcream to off-whitePage conditionwith the exception of the centerfold page, which is attached, but tenuous, as I mentioned above, all are in good overall shape with no sign of brittleness.BOTTOM LINEThe book seems is easily like FN/VF and has the shine of an almost new copy, and indeed the official 7.0 grading guide says “Centerfold is mostly secure” with the 6.0 description even going so far as to say “Centerfold may be loose” — so I’m going to call it a little less than “mostly” secure and stick with the FN description to be on the safe side as a result. But it does still look very nice in its bag and board and has only very light wear, so it’s still a solid copy. 7NM- Sub-Mariner 7 NM- 9.2 1968 John Buscema classic photo cover Tiger Shark Gorgeous7dFN24.0011/68 – by Roy Thomas/John Buscema, Tiger Shark app, Death of Destiny (Paul Destine), 1st app Ikthon, Cover is black-and-white photo of New York parade; Drawing of Namor superimposed – “For President – The Man Called Destiny!” A very solid and flat copy that has nice shine and is faily smooth to the touch. It has that glaring “13” store mark in the CCA area which detracts from how strong a copy it is, sure, so there is that. But edge wear is minor to moderate (and you can see a couple of edges on both sides that show a little), corners are solid, but somewhat blunted, there’s a hint of a couple of corner fold remnants, spine shows light evidence of having been read before, and the back view of the spine shows some light stress lines as well Back cover has faded a bit in the last half-century and has faint evidence of handling wear overall, and not perfectly smooth or anything but solid enough. Some surface build-up is visible. I note a couple of faint smudge marks when I hold the book up to the light, with only the one just to the right of the Namor figure on the cover showing in the photos. Inner covers show light Silver Age tanning, and the staples are well attached, and the pages are off-white and look good. A curious note about the lower staple (and I took a photo of this) — the upper and lower staples show on the inside on different pages, so that lower staple either tried but didn’t quite make it all the way through to the centerfold, or it pulled through that one page. However, the FN grading guide notes that “Centerfold may be loose” and this certainly is not loose, but rather still mostly secure. Bottom line is a very solid mid-grade copy with an obvious store mark.7NM-2.2511/68 – REPRINT (actually Tales to Astonish (vol 2) #7 – June, 1980) – by Roy Thomas/John Buscema, Tiger Shark app, Death of Destiny (Paul Destine), 1st app Ikthon, Cover is black-and-white photo of New York parade; Drawing of Namor superimposed – “For President – The Man Called Destiny!” Affordable way to pick up reading copy of Sub-Mariner 7. Only extremely minor wear; perhaps was lightly read; almost new-looking. (Interesting how they kept the original figure of Namor on the cover but updated the photo in the background to make it look more like 1980).8VF2.2512/68 – REPRINT (actually Tales to Astonish (vol 2) #8 – July, 1980) – by Roy Thomas/John Buscema, 1st Silver Age appearance of Betty Dean, Classic Namor vs Thing cover – “In the Rage of Battle!” Affordable way to pick up reading copy of Sub-Mariner 8. Looks like it was lightly read with some minor wear, but mostly new-looking.9FN-24.0001/69 – by Roy Thomas/Marie Severin, Tiger Shark app, 1st app Naga and Serpent Crown – “The Spell of the Serpent!” Oh boy, what a fantastic-looking copy that is flat, about as shiny as it must have been when it was first published, as well as being about as smooth as that too. However…and very sadly… you can see that the CCA box is almost entirely missing. A smudge mark right in the middle of Namor’s hair, along with a touch of wear at the extreme edges, and some light Silver Age tanning would have put this copy easily at the VF level — again, the copy looks about as nice and shiny as it must have when brand new, which is truly amazing. Pages are off-white and hint at white here or there. Excellent shape! But the missing piece is that one glaring defect that’s going to drop this one at least two grades. I’m listing it at FN-, which is a genuine shame. I’ll let you look at the bevy of photos I took of this beauty and leave it to you to decide if that’s the right thing. Bottom line is that if you are looking for an absolutely beautiful copy that’s flat, undeniably shiny and smooth as anything, and you can deal with the one major defect, then perhaps this can work for you.11FN+11.9503/69 – by Roy Thomas/Gene Colan, vs Captain Barracuda – “The Choice and the Challenge!” Surfaceflat, still with good shine and almost perfectly smooth as well (though not perfectly)Edge Weareasy to spot against that dark background, and as you can see, mostly minor, with only a single rougher area in back upper-left area.Overall Wearnothing notableFolds/Creasesfaint hints of folds at corners, but no color-breaking fold lines.Wrinklingvirtually noneCornersslightly bluntedPrinting DefectsnoneArrival StampsnoneSpineshows that the book has been read before, with some small staple tears visible enough in the close-up photos. Upper-left corner area shows a couple of specks which are smooth to the touch (foxing dot at top?). Only minor wear though overall.SmudgesI see nothing more than a couple of very faint smudges on the back whe I hold the book up to the light.Surface build-upback has only faint traces of any build-upInner coversshow some Silver Age tanning, but cleanPage coloroff-whitePage conditiongood with no sign of brittleness; everything attached.BOTTOM LINEThis would be a FN/VF copy, hands down that displays wonderfully. Absolutely better than mid-grade, but due to the staple tears and rust being a bit more than “minor” I have no choice but to demote below FN/VF. Still solidly upper-mid-grade. 12FN/VF22.5004/69 – by Roy Thomas/Marie Severin, Origin of the Serpent Crown – “A World Against Me!” Book is flat, still with good shine, and mostly smooth, though note that there are several hairline creases on the front cover mostly that aren’t perfectly smooth to the touch. The “12 store mark over the CCA box is plain enough in the photos, as is the fact that there is only minor edge wear present. As I mentioned, that surface does have several color-breaking fold remnants (all visible enough in the photos and mostly nearer the right edge). Right edge of cover shows additional wear right about where you’d expect someone to have turned the pages. Corners show slight blunting. Wear along the spine is present, but also minor, as you can see in the close-ups that the solid black line that runs down the length of the spine is only interrupted by tiny tick marks, none of which are siginificant, and they are pretty much standard bill of fare for the assigned grade. Staples both look good and do indeed go all the way through to the centerfold. Back cover slightly faded in the last half-century with some surface build-up beginning to show. Fold marks are present but much more subtle on this side. Top edge isn’t perfectly smooth. Inner covers are bright, but not quite white anymore. Pages off-white and mostly looked good when I carefully leafed through it — I did not a couple of “minor interior tears” at bottom margin (that description straight from the FN/VF grading guide), so nothing more than what’s allowed anyway. Bottom line is that it does have some visible fold lines on front, but remains solid and still upper-mid-grade. Plenty of photos, so take a good look!12FN/VF1.9504/69 – REPRINT (actually Tales to Astonish (vol 2) #12 – Nov, 1980) – by Roy Thomas/Marie Severin, Origin of the Serpent Crown – “A World Against Me!” Affordable way to pick up reading copy of Sub-Mariner 12. Also contains back-up Vision story by Tom DeFalco/John Fuller called “Double Vision”. Has been read before, but remains in upper-mid-grade condition.14cPR3.7506/69 – by Roy Thomas/Marie Severin, vs Original Human Torch, Mad Thinker, Egghead, Pupper Master app, Death of Toro (Thomas Raymond) – “Burn, Namor Burn!” This one does not require much description — it’s in poor condition, completely missing cover. Pages all seem to be present, so it’s suitable for reading, but it’s nothing more than a low-cost filler. Don’t buy this on its own — combine it as an add-on with other copies found here.14FN2.5006/69 – REPRINT (actually Tales to Astonish (vol 2) #14 – January, 1981) – by Roy Thomas/Marie Severin, vs Original Human Torch, Mad Thinker, Egghead, Pupper Master app, Death of Toro (Thomas Raymond) – “Burn, Namor Burn!” Affordable way to pick up reading copy of Sub-Mariner 14. Average looking copy that’s been read before; solid mid-grade.16FN-16.0008/69 – by Roy Thomas/Marie Severin, 2nd appearance of Walter Newell (later becomes Stingray) – “The Sea That Time Forgot!” A copy that absolutely looks better than the grade I had to assign it, that lies flat, still has nice shine, and is almost as smooth to the touch as any new copy would be. The edge wear here is minor, but the exception is the lower edge of the front cover, which has some chips missing (easier to spot on the photo of the inner front cover). This turned what would surely have been no worse than a FN/VF copy into a plain old mid-grade copy. Corners show blunting, some little store marks are plain enough near the issue #/price. Spine is in great shape and shows only minimal wear with some little ticks, all easily seen in the close-ups. Back cover faded slightly in the last half-century, and you can see the light coating of surface build-up easily enough in the photos. Inner covers aren’t quite white anymore, but they and the pages are solidly off-white, and the pages all looked good when I carefully leafed through the book, so no surprises there. Bottom line is that the bottom front edge caps this one at mid-grade, which is a shame because it really has that nice solid, upper-mid-grade look to it everywhere else. But so be it. I marked it FN- to be conservative, but it really looks nice in its bag and board and like I said, much beter than the final grade I had to give it. Plenty of photos, so take a good look!16cPR1.9508/69 – by Roy Thomas/Marie Severin, 2nd appearance of Walter Newell (later becomes Stingray) – “The Sea That Time Forgot!” This one does not require much description — it’s in poor condition, completely missing the front cover. Back cover and all pages still attached, so it’s nothing more than a low-cost filler copy. Don’t buy this on its own — combine it as an add-on with other copies found here.17FN+17.0009/69 – by Roy Thomas/Marie Severin, 1st app Kormok; 1st app Dynorr the Stalker – “From the Stars The Stalker!” An obvious upper-mid-grade copy that lies flat, has excellent shine, and is almost as smooth to the touch as any brand new copy (pretty amazing actually). Edge wear here is minimal, and that of course, would show pretty well against that dark background, and you can see in the photos that it all falls in the “minor” category. A fold remannt visible in that upper-right corner, and indeed, I noted several of the upper page tips shows signs of having been folded — you can see it in the inner photos, but it’s all in the margin area only and does not affect any panels. Other than that one corner, I don’t see any other fold or crease marks. Any glance at the front cover shows that it has a number of small store marks, so take note of those in the general vicinity of the title area. Spine is flat and mostly tight, and that solid black line that runs down its length has only slight interruptions with any color-breaks, the largest one being right above the upper staple — only very slight ticking elsewhere — easily seen in close-up photos, so again, “minor wear” is the operative word. Back cover shows some uneven fading — it’s obvious the book was in a stack with parts of the edges exposed to the light — but as a result, the middle area is mostly free of any surface build-up, and even when I hold the book up to the light, I really can’t find any smudge marks. Inner covers not quite white anymore, but remain clean, and pages are off-white, and other than the little tip curls, they looked still in excellent shape with everything still nicely attached. Bottom line is that this could possibly be FN/VF copy. It’s hands-down better than your average mid-grade copy but just as obviously not VF anymore — I chose to stay safe at FN+ — it’s upper-mid-grade for sure. Plenty of photos, so take a good look!18FN+11.9510/69 – by Roy Thomas/Marie Severin, Triton app, 2nd app Kormok; 2nd app Dynorr the Stalker – “Side By Side with Triton!” This is a very solid copy that lies flat, still has good shine to it, and quite smooth to the touch — not perfectly, mind you, but you’re not going to find much at all here in the way of any cover wrinkling. Edge wear, as you can see in the photos, is pretty minor, with the corners being ever-so-slightly blunted. There are no fold or crease marks on the front (though you can see the slight one in the lower-left of the back). Spine is solidly upper-mid-grade, showing a prior reading or two, but with only some minor spine ticks left behind, which is typical of this grade, and even a bit higher. The solid black line that runs the length of the spine has only minor interruptions in the color, so this is a very good-looking spine overall. Back cover has faded some in the last half-century of course, and you can see some bit of surface build-up here and there from being handled before, or lying in stack of other books. Inner covers show some light Silver Age tanning. Pages are off-white, and they all looked good when I carefully leafed through the book — no surprises there. Where I’d say the book falls short is when I hold it up to the light, I can make out some smudge marks on both sides (for example, there’s one right over Namor’s right shoulder — very hard to make out unless you do what I did and have the light reflect off the surface) — that sort of thing, so a bit of staining or soiling, but again, that’s allowed with a right-around-mid-grade copy. Bottom line is that if it hadn’t been for the smudges, I’d have probably gone with FN/VF because it’s seems a solidly upper-mid-grade copy, but it is what it is, so it’s closer to middle-of-the-road as a result. Plenty of photos, so take a good look!18aGD3.7510/69 – by Roy Thomas/Marie Severin, Triton app, 2nd app Kormok; 2nd app The Stalker – “Side By Side with Triton!” Do I really need to spell it out here? This is an obviously low-grade, well-read, rugged, worn, wrinkled, fold-ridden, (insert additional adjectives here) copy that has tears here and there. Pretty much the works. But it’s still all technically attached. A low-grade reader copy to be sure, and probably not worth buying on its own — but combined with other copies in this listing, it might be a low-cost add-on!19 Sub-Mariner 19 FN 6.0 1969 / KEY – 1st app/origin of Stingray (Walter Newell)21VG/FN9.9501/70 – by Roy Thomas/Marie Severin, Death of Lord Seth (Namor’s advisor) – “Invasion from the Ocean Floor!” Clearly below mid-grade, this copy still lies flat, has some shine left on it, and is actually quite smooth to boot. The color-breaking fold marks that you can see at a couple of the corners don’t seem to have left much in the way of cover wrinkling. Edges show the moderate wear you’d expect to find on a roughly middle-of-the-road copy, with really the more significant wear being right along the spine, where it’s easy to see that this one has been enjoyed several times. The photos show all this in great detail, so I don’t need to belabor it — you can seen the short split right at the bottom of the spine. Back cover has only slightly faded, the original owner left his “TB” initials on the bottom edge, and you can see the light coating of surface build-up, but no folds or creases, so overall still in good shape. Inner covers are actually still near-white, and the pages looked good too when I leafed through it. Some of the corners were folded over in the margins, so I I straighted them out. Bottom line is that I don’t have to tell you this is a used copy. That’s pretty evident. But it’s still structurally sound and obviously better than a straight-up reader copy.23FN/VF Sub-Mariner 23 FN/VF 7.0 1970 / Namor, Roy Thomas / 1st appearance/origin Orka23FN- 5.5 to FN Sub-Mariner 23 FN- 5.5/6.0 1970 / Namor, Roy Thomas / 1st appearance/origin Orka24VG/FN9.5004/70 – by Roy Thomas/John Buscema, Tiger Shark app, 2nd app Orka – “The Lady and the Tiger Shark!” A copy that is still flat, with some shine left to it and is actually quite smooth overall (though not perfectly) that is largely clean and even still has pages that are near-white, it suffers mostly from the obvious edge and corner wear that prevent this one from elevating to mid-grade. The bottom-left corner in particular shows that the cover took a hit, and the bottom-right corner is a bit rugged too. Spine has moderate wear from some prior readings, and lower staple is discolored, but both are solidly attached. Back has only a couple of light smudges, and is more worn toward the bottom-right corner. Everything looks good on the inside with everything attached. Bottom line is that this is on the lower end of the spectrum, but still presents reasonably well. No way it gets close to mid-grade though, but is absolutely better than a straight-up reader copy, so it sits right about in between.25FN/VF14.9505/70 – by Roy Thomas/Sal Buscema, Origin of Atlantis – “A World My Enemy!” Copy presents well, lies nice and flat, still has excellent shine, and is near perfectly smooth to the touch — you’ll be hard-pressed to find any cover wrinkling here. All the edge wear you can make out in the photos is minor, with the exception of a tiny flake of the edge chipped off at the upper-right of the back, caused by a bit of corner blunting. No fold or crease marks visible from the front, and only by holding the book up to the light can you see a faint fold remnant in the upper-left of back. Spine is in fantastic shape, and that solid black line that runs down its length is hardly broken at all. You can see where the book was curled open to read about a half-inch in from the spine though, where a faint color-breaking line can be made out in the photos, so yes, it’s been read before clearly and not perfect. Staples solid with only slight discoloration. Back cover remains bright, though I’m sure not as white as it was a half century ago, and you can see traces of some surface build-up and hints of foxing dots as well. All standard bill of fare for a mid-to upper-mid-grade copy like this one. Inner covers are bright, if not perfectly white, and you can detect a hint of that foxing there as well. Pages all looked in grade shape when I leafed through it carefully. No surprises there. Bottom line is that this is easily better than mid-grade, but the faint wear near spine and the visible build-up/foxing on the back prevents any attempt to elevate to VF, so we’ll stick with a rating right in between. It’s still a solid upper-mid-grade copy that won’t disappoint, and it looks great in its bag and board.26FN22.5006/70 – by Roy Thomas/Sal Buscema, 2nd app/death of Red Raven – “Kill! Cried the Raven!” A solid, right around middle-of-the-road copy that lies flat, still has some good shine, and is much smoother to the touch than you would expect any mid-grade copy to be. Look at the photos, and you’ll find all the tell-tale signs of an average copy, with some light edge wear, gentle overall wear, slightly blunted corners, some traces of surface build-up on the back, a spine that clearly shows it’s been read a couple of times before with staples that still look good and are attached all the way through to the centerfold. Inner covers still bright and clean, and pages are off-white, and they all looked good when I carefully leafed through the book. Like I said, it’s a pretty average copy, and the only special note I need to make is that at some point in the past, someone attached a third staple to the middle of the spine and then later carefully removed it. This is near impossible to detect from the front, because it’s so near where the spine has its own wear, but when you turn the book over and look at the back, it’s visible right in the middle along that spine edge. And you can see trace evidences of it in the inner photos I provided, now that you know to look for it. Curious that someone would have chosen to do this because the spine is well attached and is in no danger of coming loose. Bottom line is that the book is still a bit of wear along the spine away from grading FN+ anyway, but because of these other couple of things, I think it’s safer to stay right at mid-grade.28FN/VF14.7508/70 – by Roy Thomas/Sal Buscema – “Youthquake!” A solid copy that’s flat, still with some nice shine, and very smooth to the touch (though not perfectly). Edge wear is largely minimal with the exception of the rough spot in lower-right of front (plainly visible in photos). No folds or creases on either side. Spine shows that the book has been read once or twice before, but it is mostly free of any of the normal ticks or color-breaks you often find). Staples slightly discolored, though hardly rusty. Both go all the way through to the centerfold, as shown. Back faded slightly after a half-century of storage but remains near-white. A little coating of surface build-up can be seen in photos — all structurally sound here. Inner covers white and clean, with just a hint of foxing. Pages off-white and in great shape. Bottom line is that this is a clear upper-mid-grade copy that might have pushed for VF-, but the rough spot on front caps this one at FN/VF.30FN/VF14.5010/70 – by Roy Thomas/Sal Buscema, vs Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell), Rick Jones app – “Calling Captain Marvel!” A solidly upper-mid-grade copy that shows some light wear, a couple of color-broken fold remnants, some spine ticks, some surface build-up on back, and a little touch of moisture spot in the upper-left of the back with a spine that shows it’s been read a couple of times before. Inner covers clean, and pages are near-white, putting this one absoutlely in the upper-mid-grade category. Obviously that “13” store mark in the CCA area also is a drawback. Bottom line is that this is a solid, if not spectacular copy that still is structually better than mid-grade — I’m calling it FN/VF, but a quibblier might drop it a hair lower, but make no mistake, it’s not fantastic, but it’s a good quality overall copy.31VF-18.0011/70 – by Roy Thomas/Sal Buscema, 2nd full app Stingray, Triton app, Thing app, Attuma app – “Attuma Triumphant!” It presents wonderfully and is flat, still with amazing shine, and about as smooth to the touch as you could hope for. Only the slightest color-breaks in a couple of corners cause it to be disqualified for VF, so just misses being “high” grade, but you can see for yourself in the spine close-ups that this copy doesn’t seem to have been handled much at all. Staples nicely centered and look good. Back cover shows only slight fading and has picked up a light smudge here and there that you really can’t see until you hold the book up to the light (one in lower-left coupon area) — a touch of surface buil-up is also visible, but structurally, this one is quite sound. Inner covers show only the faintest hint of any tanning but are clean. And pages are easily off-white and even hint toward white here and there. Bottom line is that this just misses being VF, but it is without question a solid upper-mid-grade copy on the higher end of that scale.32FN—12/70 – by Roy Thomas/Sal Buscema, 1st app/origin Llyra – “Call Her Llyra, Call Her Legend!” Structurally, this is a nearly-flat copy with minimal overall wear. Not much in the way of edge wear, as you can plainly see in the photos. Spine hints at one or two prior readings with some small color-breaks and ticks. Corners slightly blunted. Back cover not faded much and is still whitish. Even the inner pages seem better even than off-white, even hinting at white here or there. The reason this falls below mid-grade however is because it seems to have been in a moist location at some point in its past, and if you hold the book up to the light, you can see that, while it’s quite smooth to the touch, it has a hint of warping to it. You really can’t see this from the photos, and that edge-on shot from the bottom shows it isn’t warped per se, but you can just tell. The inside front cover also has a splotch remnant that you can see, as does a spot in the upper third of the back, and a couple of the front inner pages also seem mildly affected. On top of all that, there are visible smudges in several places on both sides. Some you can faintly make out in the photos, but most aren’t visible until you hold the book up to the light. Make no mistake — it’s a solid copy, and I might still be justified in calling it straight-up average FN, but my general impression was that it fell just short of mid-grade. Inside its bag and board, you’d never guess at these things, so it makes for a nice display copy.34FN/VF Sub-Mariner 34 FN/VF 7.0 1971 / Defenders prelude with Hulk, Silver Surfer36NM-29.0004/71 – by Roy Thomas/Sal Buscema, Wedding of Namor and Lady Dorma, 2nd app Llyra – “What Gods Have Joined Together!” I marked this NM- just to be on the safe side, but as you can see in the photos of this flat, still shiny, and super-smooth copy, there’s next to no wear showing at all. Edges aren’t pristine, but they’re close, and the spine looks like it may have been opened only once (before I did it to thoroughly check the inside pages, which look excellent by the way). Back is perhaps not as white as it was a half-century ago, but it seems free of surface build-up and looks fabulous too. This is very close to NM, which is saying something for a 50 year-old copy!37VF/NM29.0005/71 – by Roy Thomas/Ross Andru, Death of Lady Dorma, Llyra app, Attuma app – “The Way to Dusty Death!” A fantastic, even if not perfect copy that’s flat, with plenty of shine and about as smooth as you’re likely to find. Against that dark background at the top, you can see it has only one minor bit of wear, and I detect next to nothing anywhere else (zoom in on the photos, and you’ll see). The spine is not without tiny little ticks, but they all still fall within those allowed for the grade, and that spine is about as tight as you could hope for. Back is still near-white, with no folds or creases, has only a touch of any surface build-up — the book was obviously stored well early in its life. Even the inner pages are still near-white. It falls short of being pristine, sure, but there is no doubt this is a well-preserved, high-grade copy.38VF-14.9506/71 – by Roy Thomas/Ross Andru, Origin of Sub-Mariner retold – “Namor Agonistes!” A solidly upper-mid-grade copy that lies flat, has plenty of shine and is about as smooth as any new copy. The pictures will show that it has only very faint edge wear and ever-so-slightly blunted corners. The little “12” store mark is also visible in the CCA box. Spine is what ultimately dropped this below VF, where you can see it has several color breaks, and I considered those a bit too much to qualify for VF. Back cover is still white and clean — this one was obviously stored properly early in its life. And pages are cream to off-white, and they all looked good. It’s a great copy, but I think it just misses the mark on being “high” grade, but if a tier just below that suits your needs, then this one should do nicely.39NM-42.5007/71 – by Roy Thomas/Ross Andru, Stingway app, Leonard McKenzie app – “And Here I’ll Stand!” Wow, this copy literally looks almost brand new, which is astonishing for a 50 year-old book. It is flat, still shiny like a new copy, and you’re not likely to find one as smooth as this baby. That dark background would held any edge wear stand out, and you can look all you like, and you’ll find next to none here. Even holding the book up to the light reveals next to no defects. Spine is near-perfect, and there’s hardly any indication that the book was ever read. I did carefully page through it, looking for anything out of the ordinary, but I found pages that are off-white and still in excellent shape. Back cover is still white, and there doesn’t seem to be any surface build-up to speak of. It’s almost as if this one was bought, perhaps paged through, and then immediately stored away, where it has obviously been preserved all these decades. I marked it NM- just because it isn’t pristine, but dang, is it ever nice!40VF/NM24.0008/71 – by Gerry Conway/Gene Colan, Spider-Man app, 1st app Mind-Master, 1st app Turalla; 1st app Stephan Tuval; 2nd app Lady Tuvia – “Under the Name of Ritual” I admit this is not a pristine copy, but dang, is it ever nice! Flat with a still-wonderful shine, and about as smooth as you’re likely to find. Three of the corners seem still near-perfect, with only that lower-left one showing any blunting (that one corner seems to have been ever-so-slightly dinged, or this one would surely be about NM). Edge wear is virtually negligible, and you can make out only a tiny spine tick or two. Back is near-white, but I see that lower edge isn’t perfect, and I provided a close-up to show you about the only thing on this book that doesn’t look like a NM copy. Pages are off-white and even hint near white in places. Again, not pristine, but if you’re okay with a little imperfection, but still want a high-grade copy, this one could well work, and boy, does it ever look nice in its bag and board!41VF14.9509/71 – by Gerry Conway/George Tuska, Stingray app, Mind-Master app – “Whom the Sky Would Destroy!” Has the look of a book that was previously read but well cared for. It’s flat, still has good shine, and about as smooth a copy as you’re likely to find. Even against that darkish background, there’s only light edge wear. You can see the little spot near center of spine where it was no doubt held open with a thumb, so the spine isn’t perfect, but you can also just as obviously see it’s in great shape. Back is near-white and seems completely clean even when held up to the light. Pages are off-white, and they all looked good when I leafed through it. A great, but not perfect copy, and still high-grade.42VF/NM22.5010/71 – by Gerry Conway/George Tuska, Mind-Master app – “And a House Whose Name is Death!” This is a great copy that is flat, with plenty of shine, and about as smooth as it must have been when brand new. Only the slight edge wear you see in the photos, and corners that are not perfect, keep this one from being NM, because that spine has almost no ticks at all, the back cover is clean and about as white as it must have originally been, and the pages too are easily off-white, and they all looked good. Not perfect for sure, but if you’re a high-grade collector and don’t require perfection, this one should do nicely!44VF/NM34.9512/71 – by Gerry Conway/Marie Severin, vs Human Torch, Llyra, Stingray, Tiger Shark app Leonard McKenzie app – “Namor Betrayed!” What a great copy! Flat and has to be near as shiny as it was when new, and about as smooth a copy as you’re likely to find, it has only very minor edge wear (see that upper edge for most of it) that still leaves this one easily in the “high-grade” category. Corners only slightly blunted, spine seems almost completely unmarred, back cover looks almost perfectly clean, and pages that are off-white to white. It’s not a NM copy for sure, but it feels obviously better than VF also, so if you’re looking for a high-grade copy here, this one should do nicely, even if not entirely pristine.45FN/VF14.0001/72 – by Gerry Conway/Marie Severin, Human Torch app, Llyra, Stingray, Tiger Shark, Leonard McKenzie app – “…And Fire Stalks the Skies!” Definitely above average with a flat, still-shiny and smooth surface that shows some light wear at edges. Spine has only light ticking (see side photo), back is clean and near-white, pages are off-white and look great. A solidly upper-mid-grade copy for sure. Not going to get to VF, but FN/VF to VF- feels about right.51FN+–07/72 – by Bill Everett/Mike Friedrich, 2nd app/origin of Namorita, Llyra app – “Armageddon — At Fifty Fathoms Full!” A solid upper-mid-grade copy that you can pick up and see that it’s been read, but remains flat, still shiny and except right at spine where it was held, is almost perfectly smooth. Any edge wear you see is all minor. Corners show some blunting. Bottom-right edge shows a fold remnant (visible in photos). Spine shows moderate wear but is still easily above mid-grade. Staples still have some shine and look good. Back cover only slightly faded, has no fold or crease marks, and only some light surface build-up. Inner covers are clean, though not as white as they must have originally been, and pages are easily off-white, and they all looked good when I leafed through it. It might qualify for FN/VF, but I thought perhaps the spine showed a hair too much wear to go that high. Still a solid overall copy.52VF32.5008/72 – by Bill Everett/Mike Friedrich, Sunfire app, Dragon-Lord app, Namorita app – “Atomic Samurai!” At first glance, the book looks close to brand new, and is as flat, clean and smooth as you’re likely to find. Bright colors, a clean back with only one tiny little blemish near bottom edge, just right of center, pages off-white and in excellent shape. Only the spine serves as evidence that the book was ever opened before, and has picked up a handful of ticks, but even those are light and certainly still within the allowed range of a VF copy (as my CGC 8.0 copy of Marvel Spotlight #32 will attest). Bottom line is that this isn’t a perfect copy, but it is without a doubt still a top-notch one.55FN/VF7.5011/72 – by Bill Everett, 1st app Torg – “The Abominable Snow-King!” Absolutely better than a mid-grade copy, this one is flat, still has plenty of shine and is almost as smooth as a new copy. It shows signs of light wear at edges and spine that you can see plainly enough in the photos, and the back has a couple of light blemishes (one at bottom edge, left of center that barely shows) but is still white. Pages are off-white. This one is solidly upper-mid-grade but certainly no higher.56FN-7.5012/72 – by Dan Adkins/Mike Friedrich – “Atlantis Mon Amour” Copy looks quite nice from the front with seeming no fading of that bright white background. Has moderate edge wear, a hint of a bit of wrinkling, and some spine wear that you can make out in the photos, but hardly breaks the color of the solid vertical line. Pages look good and are easily off-white or slightly better, but the ragged/chippd upper back edge and the little holes you see in the mid-to-lower area of the spine are what drop this otherwise FN+ or so copy down to below mid-grade. A solid copy that got somehow got scuffed back there and is now relegated to lower-grade.57VF-28.0001/73 – by Bill Everett (bondage cover) – 1st Bronze Age appearance of Venus (Aphrodite Ourania), vs Ares – “…In the Lap of the Gods!” Copy is flat, shiny and smooth, still with bright colors, minor edge wear, a clean back and pages that are still near-white. Only the color-breaking fold in the lower-right corner keeps this from grading VF. A solid upper-mid-grade copy.58VF/NM–02/73 – by Bill Everett/Steve Gerber/Bill Everett, 1st app Tamara Rahn – “Hands Across the Water, Hands Across the Skies” Wow, this book looks almost brand new with only trace evidence that it ever may have been handled before. Talk about a flat, shiny and smooth copy — you have all that here, with only a couple of tiny little spine ticks. Back is still white, and the inner pages look terrific, and are near-white themselves. I would have easily gone with NM- here (allowing for those little ticks), but I note a very light pen mark over Tamara’s left shoulder that forced me to demote it further (and I guarantee you might never have noticed it had I not pointed it out). If you’re looking for a high-grade copy that doesn’t have to be absolutely perfect, this copy should do nicely!60FN/VF12.5004/73 – by Bill Everett/Steve Gerber/Sam Kweskin, Tamara Rahn app, Namor Retakes the Throne of Atlantis – “The Invasion of New York!” Book looks almost brand new — flat, shiny and smooth with minimal wear, almost like a new copy, but I had to demote it a couple of grades due to a ragged/chipped edge on top of back (see rear photo — it’s subtle, but you can see it up top). Pages are off-white, and it really is a nice high-grade copy other than that which surely would have graded about VF/NM, but there you have it. Perhaps I was a bit too harsh, but I’ll leave that for you to decide.61VF-13.9505/73 – by Steve Gerber/Bill Everett, vs Doctor Hydro, Namorita app, Tamara Rahn app – “The Prince and the Pirate!” Book is flat, still shiny and almost perfectly smooth still. It’s likely been gently read through before, as you can see trace evidences here and there, but it has left only light wear behind. Back is still clean and white, pages are off-white and look good. Spine has only minor wear. Probably not full VF, but it’s not far off. A very nice copy and absolutely upper-mid-grade.62FN+11.7506/73 – by Steve Gerber/Sam Kweskin/Howard Chaykin, vs Doctor Hydro, Namorita app, Tamara Rahn app – “A Realm Besieged!”/”Tales of Atlantis!” A copy you can tell has been read once or twice before but that has remained largely in solid shape. Flat, still with some good shine, and mostly smooth, some moderate wear can be seen on spine, and a bit of surface build-up on back. Pages are off-white, and they all looked fine. A solidly upper-mid-grade copy.63VF/NM27.0007/73 – by Bill Everett/Steve Gerber/Sam Kweskin/Syd Shores/Howard Chaykin – “And the Seas Shall Explode” – “Tales of Atlantis: Cataclysm!” A fantastically-preserved copy that hardly looks used at all. Flat, shiny and wonderfully smooth, there’s not even much in the way of any spine ticks. Back is clean and white; pages are off-white and looked excellent. If this one was ever read before, it left next to no evidence of it. It may not be pristine or anything, but it sure as heck is a beauty!64FN-9.5008/73 – by Steve Gerber, Howard Chaykin/Don Heck, Howard Chaykin, 1st app Madoxx; 1st app Virago – “Voyage into Chaos!; Tales of Atlantis: In the Wake of the Warriors!” Overall a nice copy with a flat, shiny and smooth surface that is dragged down by the small tear you see in the upper-right area, just next to the CCA box (shows in a couple of photos). Otherwise the book has only very light wear, is bright, even on the back side. Pages are off-white and appear excellent. A small smudge on back in upper-right coupon area that I noted when I held the book up to the light. Would probably grade at least FN/VF were it not for the tear. I demoted it harshly to FN-, but it’s a solid copy and mostly looks far better than mid-grade even.65FN-6.9509/73 – by Steve Gerber/Don Heck/Don Perlin – “The Cry of the She-Beast!” / “Tales of Atlantis: The Lurker in the Ruins!” (also contains a one-page tribute to Bill Everett, creator of the Sub-Mariner, who had passed away earlier that year). A previously-read copy (probably more than once) with moderate wear. Front side is probably best, with both spine and back showing more and a good coating surface build-up on that back side. Pages are off-white and still look fine, but I think that wear and foxing on that back side drop this to below mid-grade.Annl_1FN14.001971 – Sub-Mariner Special Edition #1 – by Stan Lee/Gene Colan, Bill Everett, Reprints Tales to Astonish #70-73; – “The Start of the Quest; Escape to Nowhere; A Prince There Was; By Force of Arms” Square-bound book that shows evidence of a prior, mostly gentle reading, but remains in solid shape.
