eBay Sony Alpha 20mm RS f/2.8 Wide Angle Prime Lens LNIB/Mint Condition w/ UV Filter Here’s another lens I don’t come across too often: the Sony 20mm f/2.8 prime lens (S/N 01858xx). The Sony version is the latest, newest incarnation of the original Minolta model with some improvements. It listed on B&H for $748 USD when it was available. This Sony Alpha mount lens will require an adapter for use on Sony E mount camera bodies. This lens is in mint condition with no wear to note – you might think it was brand new, maybe it is? This is the finest example of a Sony 20mm lens that I’ve come across and it is perfect cosmetically. The glass is clear and clean. Absolutely pristine. It is free of any imperfection including fungus, coating blemishes, dust or scratches. The aperture blades are oil free and snappy and the mount is unmarked. Focus is smooth and quick, with the characteristic sound of this model. The enamel surfaces are in fantastic, like new condition, even under close scrutiny. The lens produces crisp, nice contrast images, with a quick AF response and non rotating front element. Flare and vignette, even with the lens wide open are well controlled and the build quality of this lens is very high. Improvements over the original vintage Minolta model include a circular aperture for better defocused bokeh, a “grippier” rubber focus ring for manual focusing, and a smoother grip that does not collect dirt and crud or oxidize like the original. Included are the original petal hood, a Zeiss front cap and rear Sony lens caps. A nice Promaster UV filter and original packaging are also included. A 20mm prime is a valuable addition to any photographer’s gear bag, especially on full frame bodies. It offers more than double the angle of view of a standard 50mm lens, meaning a much wider field of view, whether it be a sweeping landscape or, with its 12” minimum focus distance, a picture taken in close quarters. With its excellent design, distortion is significantly better than with most 20mm zoom lenses. Finally, this is a fast lens, offering a maximum aperture of f/2.8. Great for use in low light or to create a nice bokeh. I had the Minolta RS version of this lens in my own kit and used it regularly, both on an A700 and A900. I can attest that it is an excellent and useful lens.
