This delightful little flower brooch is from Schoffel & Co – an Austrian company making jewellery from the 1930s to the 1960s. Schoffel showcased the finest rhinestones in the world, which had originated in Austria early in the last century, and this brooch demonstrates just how good they were.The aquamarine rhinestones forming the outer petals in this stylish structural design have a translucent, watery quality. The inner yellow petals are a delicate pale yellow known as ‘jonquil’ – the name for tiny scented narcissus. The petals are large, marquise-cut and the effect is rich and sumptuous even though the piece is relatively small. The cluster of stamens at the centre of the bloom are each topped with a small white crystal except for a single pale blue one. This adds a touch of realism, exquisite in every tiny detail. All the marquise stones are set in ornate ‘cupcake’ closed settings and held secure by openwork dogs-tooth prongs which also add a strong, decorative finishing touch. These details characterise the best costume jewellery of the era and were used extensively by Schoffel, Schreiner and Hattie Carnegie. The brooch structure is gold-plated with a straight pin and secure roll-over catch. All stones are present and original, The distinctive Schoffel makers mark – a crown – can be clearly seen on the reverse.The piece is in excellent vintage condition but it has been worn and enjoyed and has collected a few small scratches and scuffs on the metal-work, none of which detract from its beauty. This is a heritage piece which has survived for around 70 years and deserves to be treasured for generations to come.Please note that the brooch box is not included and the two pairs of earrings shown in the last two images are simply to show some lovely combinations.
