I retired a number of years ago after spending the majority of my career working in testing and calibration labs and relocated to the northeast. I wrote calibration procedures and was the calibration procedure release focal for the largest aerospace manufacture in the U.S.A. My main area of expertise was in dimensional metrology. Based upon my years of experience with electronic gaging amplifiers (and audio amplifiers) in general, I have discovered a number of common failure modes. These include carbon composition resistors going up in value, electrolytic capacitors going bad, dirty/noisy potentiometers, and connectors, sockets, switches that need cleaning. I also performed some additional preventative maintenance measures.The following work was performed on this item: 1.) Replaced (18) carbon composition resistors with carbon film resistors on EPC1215 oscillator pc board.2.) On oscillator pc board, set oscillator to 5kHz (within factory spec +/- 200Hz) (using Hewlett Packard 53131A Universal Counter) and output to 1.00 V (using Keithley 177 Digital Multimeter).3.) Replaced (23) carbon composition resistors with carbon film resistors on EPC1214 amplifier demodulator pc board.4.) Replaced (17) carbon composition resistors with carbon film resistors on EPC1216 motherboard.5.) Tested electrolytic capacitors on EPC1215 pc board and EPC1216 motherboard for value, leakage and ESR utilizing a Sencore LC-102.6.) Replaced Bourns (wire-wound) zeroing potentiometer and turns counting dial.7.) Clean and lubricate TRW/Cinch connectors and 8 pin sockets.8.) Replaced oval 3 pin power socket with IEC socket.9.) Cleaned knobs.10.) Cleaned meter glass.11.) a. Set front panel “CAL” (200 ohm) potentiometer to middle of the range.b. Using the calibration process noted below (and a GenRad 1433-B Decade Resistor box), I selected and replaced resistors R17 and R19 on the EPC1216 pc board with resistors whose values made it possible to get the “INCH” (R16) and “MM” (R18) coarse cal adjustment (2K ohm) potentiometers closer to mid-point. (NOTE: Checks were also performed on the MM scale using the Boeckeler micrometer head; converting inch to metric readings.) Thus allowing more range of adjustment of the “CAL” (200 ohm) potentiometer during subsequent calibrations or replacement of the gage head. I performed the following as a “functional test” only of the amplifier. 1.) Substituting for the gaging head installed on a 136B-5, I used a reed spring type EHE-1053 gaging head (w/ 8-pin Cinch-Jones connector) which is similar to the gaging head installed on 136B-5’s. I was able to deflect the meter moment from left to right of full scale when depressing the gaging head. (NOTE: For purposes of the photos, I simply used the reversing switch on the gaging head.)2.) Substituting for the “null” gaging head installed on a 136B-5, I used a EHE-1010 gaging head (w/ 6-pin Cinch-Jones connector). I was able to deflect the meter moment upward and downward when depressing the gaging head. (NOTE: For purposes of the photos, I simply used the reversing switch on the gaging head.)3.) Using a micrometer head, I was able to perform a rudimentary adjustment of the “CAL potentiometer” on several of the coarser ranges. NOTE: I do not have the necessary standards to perform a “system calibration” of the “Gaging Amplifier”. Likewise a normal calibration would include the gaging heads that are actually used. NOTE: Although the amplifier was originally intended for use with a 136B-5 master ring & disc comparator it “may also be used with regular Federal “Multi-Choice” Electronic Gage Heads for other gaging applications. The amplifier is equipped with polarity reversal switch for use in this type of operation.” Due to its age, and the nature of vintage test equipment it is being sold “AS-IS”. All SALES ARE FINAL. If my memory serves me correct, Mahr/Federal is no longer providing support for the 136B-5’s. So now is the time to stock up. A turn of the selector switch changes scale numerals to suit magnification chosen, eliminating the confusion of multiple scales and graduation values.Electrical zero adjustment permits quick, accurate fine adjustment. The control provides both ample range and very close control over exact zero setting.Amplifier has an output connection for operation of specialized read-out devices and may also be used with regular Federal “Multi-Choice” Electronic Gage Heads for other gaging applications.
