For sale is a fantastic and in great condition Breitling Navitimer Chrono-Matic 1806, with a Cal. 12 movement. These movements are legendary in their own right, as they were in a race for the first automatic chronograph with Zenith El Primero and Seiko 6139. They didn’t win that race, but certainly wrote their names in watch history. The hexagonal shaped case was designed in collaboration with EPSA, another legend in the history of watches. It’s a huge case at 48mm by today’s standard, so one can only imagine how big it looked 50 years ago. It has a busy dial for sure, like most Navitimers, but in a good way. Features lumed indexes, two sub registers for measuring minutes and hours on the chonograph, no seconds for time like all calibers 12, a date at 6 o’clock, and a free floating, bidirectional bezel. Comes with a premium pigskin leather strap that really complements the watch and looks very similar to the straps of the era. It’s sized at 130/80mm and should fit a wrist of 20+ cm in circumference. The dial is spotless to the naked eye. Upon close inspection with a 12x loupe, one can notice tiny, micron sized dots all over the dial. These are visible in the close up photos, but to the naked eye (and I have good eyes) it’s practically impossible to see them. Hands are also in great shape, with slight fading of the red chronograph seconds and minute hands. Lume is intact in all of the indexes, with no chunks missing. I believe it to be the original tritium lume, which has aged to a dark green(ish) brown. Being tritium, it has lost its charge a long time ago. The black bezel has very few and light scratches and a few discoloration spots, mostly on the edges. Acrylic crystal is mostly scratch free and in good shape. At the outer most edge near 1 o’clock it has a small, clean chip that is hardly noticeable. It’s shown close in the tenth photo. Case is in a really nice condition. No major scratches, dents or dings. Just light scratches from normal use and based on that and the overall geometry, I don’t believe the watch to have been polished. One of the chronograph pushers has worn out and I’m not sure if it’s a replacement or an original. Case back has the same scratches from normal use, but nothing major, and it retains its sharp edges and the etched writings. Movement looks good and keeps decent time. It winds correctly, date moves when reaching 12 o’clock, and the chronograph functions all work. The only minor issue is that the chronograph minute hands doesn’t reset exactly to zero. It registers the chronograph minutes correctly however and it should be a simple fix for any watchmaker worth their name. Although it runs well, keep in mind you’re buying a more than 50 years old watch. If you care for it to function properly in the future, a service will be needed. Waterproof The watch is rated at 30m (3 ATM), which means at most you can wash your hands or use it under rain. In no circumstances should it be used under the shower or for swimming.
