Up for auction is American Flyer O gauge passenger set #2 made in the early 1920s. Included with the set are 2 manual clockwork O gauge switches as well as the original box top and box bottom. Rolling stock includes a #13 clockwork locomotive, a #120 tender, a #1108 baggage car and a #1107 passenger coach. The clockwork locomotive was tested and it does operate. The brake works. it has one loose wheel which for operation would have to be reattached, or better, replaced. The original drive rods and attaching pins are both missing. The number 120 tender is lithographed “AMERICAN FLYER ” on both sides and the number 120 on the rear. The metal loop which allows the tender to be connected to the locomotive has been bent incorrectly and should be reset. It also appears that there is a crack or break at the very end of the loop. The number 1108 baggage car has a black roof and each side is lithographed in red, yellow, blue, black, and white. There is a red lithographed sliding door on each side. “American Flyer Line” is lithographed in white along the top of each side. “1108” is lithographed in black at the bottom corner of each side. “U.S.R.R. EXPRESS” is lettered in a yellow rectangle on each side, and “U.S. MAIL EXPRESS BAGGAGE” baggage and the American Flyer flying engine Herald is lithographed as well on each side. The number 1107 coach has a black roof and each side is lithographed in red yellow, white, and blue. “AMERICAN FLYER” is lithographed in white along the top of each side. “1107” is lithographed twice in yellow along the bottom of each side, and in between a blue lithographed flying engine Herald appears. Both passenger cars have 4 wheels and are equipped with the garter loop type couplers. All original and complete. Detail condition: #13 American Flyer Clockwork Locomotive: Overall condition is VG (C-6). There are a few scratches and typical wear. Side rods and attaching pins are missing and one wheel is loose and has a slight crack. #120 American Flyer Tender: Overall condition is G (C-5). The lithography on both sides and back end is VG (C-6) with some wear. The front loop which attaches to the locomotive pin is bent and appears to be cracked or broken at the loop. #1108 American Flyer Line Baggage Car: Overall condition is EX -(C-7-). Both sides and both ends are EX (C-7). The roof is VG (C-6) with some scratches and playwear. The frame is VG (C-6) with some typical paint flaking on its ends.. Couplers and wheels are G (C5) with accumulated dirt and oxidation. #1107 American Flyer American Flyer Line Coach: Overall condition is EX-(C-7-). The sides and ends are EX (C-7). The roof is VG+(C-6+) with a scratch or two.. The frame is VG (C-6) with a few scratches. Couplers and wheels are also VG+ (C-6+) with a scratch or two. Box: Box is Fair (C-4) overall. Bottom is VG (C-6) but top is Poor (C-3) with two corners missing cardboard and all corners ripped/separated. Please verify the condition with the photographs supplied and my grading stated above. Very low BUY IT NOW Price and no reserve! ABOUT AMERICAN FLYER O GAUGE Edmunds Metzel and American Flyer in Chicago manufactured O Gauge trains from 1907 until 1937. AC Gilbert bought American Flyer, moved production to New Haven, CT, and continued O gauge production until 1942. These trains included both clockwork (1907-1932) and electric (1918-1942). The prime market for AF O gauge is for collectors. There are some people who operate them, with the nostalgia that entails, and they like the fact that they can rather easily be repaired for operation. To date, no one is reproducing American Flyer O Gauge Trains, which enhances and slowly increases their value to collectors, as, over time, American Flyer O Gauge trains availability decreases. There are no more AF O gauge trains, other than what was originally produced through 1942, and many of these have been lost, broken, thrown away, or destroyed in fires or floods and this will continue. Lastly, from 1907 through 1942, the American Flyer Line included lithographed models which are among the most realistic and most beautiful trains ever produced, as Louis Hertz, the dean of toy train collecting, has repeatedly said. I have been collecting and researching American Flyer O & S Gauge for 49 years and TCA member since 1975. I strive to accurately describe the cosmetic condition of each item with TCA Grading Standards and the rarity and desirability by my long experience with these trains. When appropriate, I will grade all visible surfaces, or if they grade the same, I will provide an overall condition grade. Also, I point out any reproduction parts that I recognize or any surface restoration that appears not to be original.
