Please Note : Since I completed this listing some time ago, this truck became the property of another friend in Billings Montana so I am listing it here for him. He installed a good running 1949-1952 Ford flathead V8 engine so it is now a running and driving truck. Thanks a lot, Bob Woodburn 4O6-799-1847 in Bozeman Montana USA. Thanks for looking at my listing. I had to relist it due to another non-paying bidder and am sorry for any confusion or frustration his irresponsible action here may have caused you. I changed this listing to require immediate payment in order to prevent anyone from buying this vehicle and not paying for it. In order to do that, eBay requires that I list a shipping charge. I have no idea where the next owner might live so I have no idea what a reasonable delivery charge might be. As a result, I have listed a $2,000 delivery charge figuring that will be enough to deliver this truck to anywhere here in the continental USA. If you are serious about owning this very special vehicle, I would suggest you contact me at 406-799-1847 BEFORE you hit the “Buy It Now” button so we can discuss several delivery options. Thanks for your patience and understanding regarding my solution to the non-paying bidder problem. This listing is for a 1936 Ford Model 51 1-1/2 ton hose truck. It is a superb original very low mile Oregon truck that is super straight and absolutely totally rust free. It can be restored or enjoyed the way it is. A friend recently installed a good running Ford flathead V8 engine so this truck is now running and driving. This truck was ordered from the factory as a chassis with the special cowl without a windshield like the cowl used on station wagons, buses and other special bodied vehicles. The working speedometer shows only 1,840 miles and I believe that is the original mileage for this very fine truck. Hose trucks typically saw very little use and this spent most of it’s time inside the fire station. It was built in October of 1935. The sheet metal on this gem is about as nice as you could ever hope to find. The left front fender has a small crack above the wheel and it was welded but it would be easy to repair properly. The grille, hood, cowl and right front fender are as near perfect as anyone could ever hope to find. The paint was redone several years ago and is chipped in places and there are a few tiny dents too. The original stainless steel hubcaps and hood medallions are in very nice original condition and still have some of the original Ford blue accent paint on them. The wings on the V on the hood ornament are broken off as they usually are. The cut-off running boards are straight and solid. This truck has it’s 6 original wheels and perhaps the original Firestone tires which is almost unheard of. The dash and gauges are still very nice. I suspect someone through the years hi-graded the nice original steering wheel and pedal pads because the ones on the truck are deteriorated and appear to be in much worse condition than the rest of the truck is. the wooden hose box is not factory made and the rear fenders are not impressive at all. The original 221 CID L-head V-8 engine is out of the truck and partially disassembled. The block is badly cracked from freezing coolant but the cast iron cylinder heads look fine. All the remaining engine parts and accessories are included even though they are not shown in the photos. I know of a supposedly good running 1936 LB truck engine that is available locally for $1,000 and will pass that information on the new owner. The chassis, suspension and power train appear to be like new. I bought this gem of truck sight unseen from pictures a few years ago from the same friend in Oregon that I bought my 1927 Ahrens-Fox hose truck from. He represented this Ford as being a superb original low mile truck with only 1,840 original miles on it and that is part of the reason I bought it. Another reason that I bought this truck is that I happen to believe that the 1935 and 1936 Ford trucks are by far the finest looking of all the Ford trucks ever made. I have seen a Deluxe 1936 truck years ago with a chrome plated grille and sliding rear window in the back of the cab and it was truly spectacular. It was painted black and had the entire grille assembly chrome plated. When my friend delivered the 1927 Ahrens-Fox hose truck and this Ford hose truck a few years ago, I was so fascinated with making the huge Ahrens-Fox gem of a truck run and drive that I kind of forgot about this smaller Ford. A local friend has most of a 1935 Ford Darley pumper but it is in pieces and all of the sheet metal on the Ford chassis is either quite rough or missing so this truck seemed to be a logical parts truck for use in restoring his Darley pumper. Both he and I recently decided that neither one of us are very likely to restore the Darley pumper so I decided to offer this great truck to the world of Ford and fire truck enthusiasts and collectors here on eBay. I am sure he would sell his Darley project if someone is serious about restoring it to it’s prior glory. He even has a B&W photo of that specific truck taken the day it left the Darley factory. The first time I looked at this Ford, I was impressed with the absolutely fantastic sheet metal and what appears to the original Firestone 6.00 x 20 tires. Upon closer examination, I was a bit disappointed by the wear on the clutch and brake pedals and the cracks on the steering wheel. I then reasoned that people changed engines as well as engine and transmission assemblies in these early flat head Fords about as often as people changed underwear back then. Perhaps these pedals came on an engine and transmission assembly from another truck that has seen considerable use. I could not figure out why the steering wheel was so badly cracked on such a nice low mile truck. I believe this steering wheel is identical to the ones used on the 1930 – 1931 Model A Ford cars and trucks as well as the 1932 – 1936 Ford trucks. The rubber covered pedal pads are easy to unbolt from the pedals so I now suspect that some Ford collector along the way did some high-grading and swapped the pedal pads and steering wheel to get some nice original parts for his restoration project. My next concern was whether the 1,840 miles on the speedometer odometer were correct and original or not. Obviously, I have not been with this truck it’s entire life so I will never truly know for sure. I wanted to know if the speedometer worked at all so I jacked up a rear wheel and spun it as fast as I could by hand. I could not get the speedometer needle to even wiggle so I unhooked the drive cable from the back of the speedometer and had a friend turn the rear wheel. The cable turned fine so I then used two fingers to spin the input shaft on the back of the speedometer. The needle bounced when I spun the input shaft so I am sure the speedometer was working most if not all of the time this truck has been around. I have never heard of anyone claiming to be an automotive archaeologist that deals with motor vehicle details but perhaps I am becoming one out of passion as well as necessity. I did hear about a man who claims to be an industrial archaeologist 5 years ago when I was in Indiana for the 100th birthday celebration for the Model T Ford. He helped examine the building which was Ford’s first factory on Piquette Avenue in Detroit and helped some very dedicated Ford enthusiasts determine where Henry Ford’s office was as well as where several other features were in that building which is now being restored. My next quest was to carefully examine the chassis on this truck and determine if possible how much use it has been subjected to. I jacked up the rear frame and could find no perceptible wear in the rear spring shackles. I did the same with the front and found those shackles to be excellent too. I then jacked up the front axle and shook the front wheels and found only a tiny bit of play which might be in the wheel bearings and or the king pins. I checked for play in the steering and found that one can only move the rim of the steering wheel a bit less than an inch before the play in the steering system is taken up. I could find no slop or wear in any of the steering drag link or tie rod joints. The drag link joints still have the original rubber dust boots or covers on them to keep dirt and dust out and keep the grease in. How many 72 year old Fords have you ever seen with the original dust boots still intact? My friend that I bought this truck from represented it as still having the original tires on it. I can not be certain about that but I think it is very likely that he is correct. I do know that Ford shipped lot of it’s new vehicles on Firestone tires because Henry Ford was a personal friend of Harvey Firestone. I have seen many photos of new Fords of this era that have Firestone tires on them. The pair of front tires have the early Firestone tread pattern that I am the most familiar with and have enough tread on them to look like they have almost no miles on them. The tread on the four rear Firestone tires also show no appreciable wear and all match but have a slightly more aggressive tread pattern than the front pair have. One or more of these rear tires also have an early Firestone trademark which consists of a 2″ high shield with a large script F inside and red colored background with small diamonds in it. I know that all of these 6 tires have to be very old. They still hold air and appear to be usable but all have some checks or small cracks in the sidewalls as one might expect for tires of this age. These tires would look absolutely super on a vehicle displayed in a museum but should be replaced if this truck is to be street driven very much. I realize what it is like to buy something like this sight unseen so I have over 100 larger and more detailed photos of this vehicle that I can email to you if you email me or call me at 406-799-1847 with your regular email address. Please do not ask or expect me to email that many photos to you here through the regular eBay email system. I can only send 5 per email so I don’t want to send 20 emails with photos. eBay also dramatically reduces the sizes of the photos when they go through their system. I suspect some Oregon fire department repainted this very nice original “survivor” truck about 30 years ago and it appears that it has been kept inside since then. The only sheet metal damage or repair I could find is on the left front fender directly above the left front wheel. It must have been a very minor repair because the weld is only about 1/2″ long. The grille is absolutely perfect and the right front fender and hood are in similar condition. I believe the cowl used on this truck was also used on station wagons and school buses of this era. I suspect the radiator froze at the same time that the engine did but I have not tested it for leaks. The radiator core is not great and should be replaced anyway if anyone plans to drive this truck very much. I have been told that a radiator core can freeze once and sometimes twice before it will leak. The original transmission is still in this truck and the number on the upper front of the transmission clutch housing matches the number on the top of the left front frame rail so this is a numbers matching truck. The emergency brake handle still has very nice original chrome plating on it indicating that this truck was never outside very much. The transmission shifter cover plate is in superb condition and is still secured with the three original rotating metal clips that fasten to the original wood floor boards. This cover plate is almost always missing from trucks of this period. The original head lamps still have the original stainless steel bezels or rings and they are in superb original condition as are the original reflectors and glass lenses. Both of the hood side panel medallions and three of the four original stainless steel hub caps are like new and still have the original Ford blue background paint intact on them. I believe the very nice looking front bumper still has the original chrome plating on it and it is still very presentable. The dash gauges are very nice originals but I have no idea if they work well or not because I have no way to make this truck run yet. The glove box door is still very good but the original cardboard box is missing. The black vinyl seat upholstery was replaced many years ago and it still very nice. I am not sure if the fuel tank is an original Ford item or if it was fabricated by some shop almost 3/4 of a century ago. The wood hose bed appears to not have been factory built and was possibly a carryover from a horse-drawn hose cart or may have been built by a local shop or fire department. One has to keep in mind that the world economy was by no means great in 1936 and that any fire department fortunate enough to buy any new truck likely had to make do with whatever they had for a hose bed. This truck is presently located at a friend’s place in Billings Montana and can be stored there for a few months if need be. I had originally planned to keep this truck in my permanent collection, find an engine for it, find a nice box, bed or body of some kind to put on it and make a truly outstanding original “survivor” truck out of it. My interest has recently shifted to other vehicles so I have decided to offer this gem here to the world of Ford and fire truck enthusiasts. Thanks a lot, Bob Woodburn – phone 406-799-1847 in Bozeman Montana
