About Hei-Tiki: The Tiki is a very ancient symbol considered to be the most popular piece of Maori jewelry, yet it is by far the least understood, so there are numerous legends about its meaning. The Tiki is a talisman to the Maori people, and has been regarded as a unisex symbol of good luck since ancient times. Carved into various natural materials, the most valuable tiki’s were carved from pounamu, aka “greenstone” (a hard, durable, and highly valued nephrite jade from the South Island of New Zealand), which were handed down through the generations as Taonga (treasured) possessions. It has been suggested that the tiki is the myth form of the first man, created by Tane. However, some doubt this, as the hei-tiki appears to be either female, or sexless. The Maori believe the Tiki represents a fetus (an unborn human embryo). The hei-tiki looks like a distorted human figure sitting cross-legged, its large head tilted to one side. Regardless, some continue to believe Tiki came from the stars and that he was the first man of the Maori world. Tiki is also often depicted with webbed-feet which suggest a strong link to creatures of the sea. Tiki, during ancient times, was respected as the teacher of all things and the wearers of this symbol are therefore assumed to possess clarity of thought, be perceptive, be loyal, and have a great inner knowledge; the wearer’s strength is their character. The Tiki is regarded as a powerful good luck symbol when worn, and in some areas is also regarded as a fertility and growth symbol. In Maori, the words hei (something worn around the neck) and tiki (carved figure, image, neck ornament carved in an abstract form of a human) combine to create this Maori Hei-Tiki “Good Luck, Fertility” Tahei (necklace adornment).
