eBay This is a very unique mixed media 3D relief oil painting on canvas that Tony Abeyta did when living and working in Taos, New Mexico back in early 2000’s. The title is “Corn Dancer I” . The work itself is 32 inches high and 16 inches wide. It has been newly framed by the current owner in a clean minimal silver veneered lip frame. The framed work in total measures 38 x 22 and is around 14lbs or more in weight. It is hand signed in the bottom right hand corner. The most unique aspect is that the round face of the Corn Dancer is a 3D relief coming off the canvas about an inch and a half. The Corn Dancer pays respect to the corn plant, known as a life source and very important crop to the Native Peoples. The Summer Corn Dance is the most important of a cycle of dances that make up the ritual year for many Pueblo Indians in New Mexico. They mark every important aspect of Pueblo Indian life: birth, procreation, death; farming, hunting, the earth and everything that lives on it; the past, present and future of the tribe. Many of the dances have been incorporated into the tribe’s Catholic ceremonial calendar—the Pueblo Indians have been Catholics as well as Corn Dancers since the Spanish came into the area in the 17th century. Eagle Dance, Buffalo Dance, Spring Corn Dance, War Dance, Christmas Dance — dance flows like blood through Pueblo life. The Corn Dancer appears during the spring dances as a means of promoting the growth of corn. A line of male and female Corn Dancers dance in the plaza accompanied by drummers and chanters. The Corn Dance is often the principal dance of the pueblo ceremonies. The people from the North Side and those from the South Side form two different dance teams which then alternate dancing, then returning to their own kivas between dances. Gestures of the chorus are a sign language for invoking clouds, rain and growth. The tall banner is emblematic of all life: eagle and macaw feathers are seen, ocean shells are said to be attached, a fox fur hangs over a strip like the dance kilt of hand-spun native cotton. An origin myth relates that the supernatural Mother who ruled, wished her people to have a public dance which all could enjoy. War Captain (still a dance director in the pueblos) was pleased and made prayer sticks to try to bring the legendary character called Koshari— ‘he who talks a lot and seems to know everything’—to instruct the dancing. The black and white painted dancers are privileged clowns from the Koshare Society. They have a dual role as they are said also to represent the spirits of the remembered dead. *We have a few other original Tony Abeyta works listed. A graduate of New York University with an honorary doctorate from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, Tony was the 2012 recipient of the New Mexico Governor’s Excellence in the Arts award, and recognized as a Native treasure by the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture. Tony currently works in both Santa Fe, NM and Berkeley, CA. Tony’s work is included in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, Boston Fine Arts Museum, the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ, New Mexico Fine Arts Museum, Denver art museum,Crocker museum in Sacramento the Autry Museum in Los Angeles, CA, and the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, as well as in many other public & private collections.
