Assembly is required. Please Note: Box arrived taped closed from the bottom. Box is in very good shape with some minor shelf wear. The kit parts are sealed in the original bag. Hasegawa 1/48 P-38J Lightning Hasegawa’s P-38J Lightning features finely engraved panel lines. Underwing stores include optional drop tanks, two 500-pound bombs, and 10 aerial rockets along with their launchers. Also included is one sheet of bright aluminum foil peel-and-stick oval mirrors that attach to the insides of the engine nacelles. The cockpit consists of 11 separate pieces and the propellers have separately molded blades. Background: Easily one of the most recognizable fighters of its time because of its distinctive twin-boom design, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning was one of the most famous American warplanes of World War Two and the mount of America’s two top aces—Dick Bong, who scored 40 aerial victories, and Tommy McGuire, who was credited with 38 kills. However, although more than 10,000 Lightnings were built during the war, the big fighter did not fit into the Air Corps’ post-war plans and was soon retired from service. The P-38J was introduced in August 1943 with improvements to each batch, notably an increase of horse power that came with an improved turbo charger. It also included chin radiators, flat bullet-proof windshields, power-boosted ailerons, and increased fuel capacity. The streamlined engine nacelles of previous Lightnings were changed to fit the intercooler radiator between the oil coolers, forming a “chin” that visually distinguished the J model from its predecessors. While the P-38J used the same engines as the H model, the new core-type intercooler more efficiently lowered intake manifold temperatures and permitted a substantial increase in rated power. The leading edge of the outer wing was fitted with 55 US gal (210 L) fuel tanks, filling the space formerly occupied by intercooler tunnels. Later P-38J models (P-38J-25-LO production block) alleviated compressibility problems that plagued earlier aircraft by incorporating the addition of a set of electrically actuated dive recovery flaps just outboard of the engines on the bottom centerline of the wings. These aircraft also introduced hydraulically boosted ailerons, one of the first times such a system was fitted to a fighter. This significantly improved the Lightning’s rate of roll and reduced control forces for the pilot. This production block and the following P-38L model are considered the definitive Lightnings, and Lockheed ramped up production, working with subcontractors across the country to produce hundreds of Lightnings each month. A number of P-38J airframes were modified to pathfinder configuration and to unarmed F-5B, F-5C, F-5E, and F-5F photo-reconnaissance aircraft.
